Prologue§  The Arizona State Sun Devils had just put their home crowd into a frenzy by going up on the New Mexico State Aggies 24-14 early in the fourth quarter. I sat sullen in the press box on the west sidelines in the old Sun Devil Stadium. My press buddy, Las Cruces Sun-News sports editor Abe Perilman sat beside me, shaking his head, his ever-present pipe wagging back and forth between his lips. Less than a quarter to go and our 10-game winning streak on the line. I was starting to get sick.  Here comes the ASU kickoff and what I’ve replayed in my mind for over 50 years. Pervis Atkins gathers the ball on his own 2-yard line, starts up the west sidelines and heads north. I’ve used my extended right arm at the diagonal with thumb pointed up to represent Perv. I still see his crimson number 27 on the white road game jersey, and the same number penned on my thumb. He’s on the 20 … the 25 … the 40. Key blocks seem to be working as I stand up and start pounding on Perilman’s shoulder.  Perv and my thumb are now directly below the press box, gliding along as he avoids tackles. One last lunging Sun Devil misses. Perv breezes past our 250 or so Aggie fans in the ground level seats on the west side as he sprints into the end zone. Now it’s 24-20, and we miss the extra point… -Dan Perry 2012
